A man has been imprisoned after driving away from court moments after he was disqualified from driving.
George Fothergill, 60, of Tring Close, Stoke on Trent had just been disqualified from driving for a period of 12 months when he drove away from Mansfield Magistrates' Court on 19th July 2017.
Magistrates watched from the retiring room window in disbelief as Fothergill got into his car and drove away. The shameless welder/labourer initially denied driving whilst disqualified and without insurance, but changed his plea to guilty when he attended the court for trial last Thursday.
Lucy Jones, mitigating, said: "This is idiocy at its best."
District Judge Andrew Meachin said: "This was absolutely flagrant.
"He walked out of court and got into his car. He had been disqualified literally minutes before."
Jailing Fothergill for ten weeks, he told him: "Your defence was that someone else was driving - which was a lie."
Fothergill was ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge, and banned for 57 weeks.
