A former Premier League footballer, who had previously boasted about being a millionaire, insisted that he had no income or savings when he appeared before Llandudno Magistrates' Court on warrant.
James Hurst, 26, had earlier pleaded not guilty to charges of drink driving and being drunk and disorderly. He was due to appear for trial on 5th April, but failed to surrender on unconditional bail on that day.
As is normally the case, the trial went ahead and Hurst was convicted in his absence. A warrant was issued for his arrest and he was brought before the court on 11th April.
Appearing in custody, the arrogant footballer told the bench he was "otherwise engaged" on 5th April when he should have attended for trial. He admitted the additional charge of failing to surrender to bail.
During the sentencing hearing, the player was warned by Magistrates that it was an offence to complete the statement of means form incorrectly.
When the Magistrates said they did not accept his completed declaration, Hurst flippantly replied: "That's your problem."
He was fined £770 for drink driving, £330 for being drunk and disorder and £330 for failing to surrender. He was also ordered to pay a £877 contribution towards prosecution costs and was disqualified from driving for 20 months.
Given his attitude, he has done well to avoid a few extra hours of reflection time in the cells.
