A man featuring on popular Channel 4 series Gogglebox has been jailed for drink driving, according to reports today.
George Gilbey, 35, of Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, admitted driving whilst over the prescribed limit when he recently appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court. The date of his initial and sentencing hearings are unclear, owing to conflicting information in several media reports.
Gilbey is said to have run out of fuel and walked to a Tesco filling station to fill up a can. Staff at the filling station thought they could smell alcohol on the former Celebrity Big Brother contestant's breath and called the police to report their concerns.
As a result of a positive roadside breath test, Gilbey was arrested on suspicion of drink driving. Following an evidential breath test at the police station, he was charged with the offence on the basis that the amount of alcohol in his breath was almost three times the prescribed limit of 35 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath.
Gilbey was subject to a community order imposed last year for an assault on his ex-girlfriend, Gemma Conway.
Magistrates sentenced Gilbey to 3 months' custody and banned him from driving for 5 years.
Under normal circumstances, although not reported by the media, he would have also been ordered to pay £122 victim surcharge and £85 towards prosecution costs.
Apologies for the uncharacteristic brevity of this article, but information surrounding Gilbey's conviction is thin on the ground.
