Warrant Issued for Spitting Batley Man

A Batley man is wanted after failing to attend court on a charge of assaulting an emergency worker.

Jamie Glover, otherwise known as Jay Glover, 32, of Wyvern Close, Batley, was convicted in his absence at York Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, 22nd October 2019.

Was part of a rowdy drunken group that boarded the train at Huddersfield last Friday, 18th October. The concerned train manager contacted police, who met the train at York. Glover was arrested when he failed to heed warnings to moderate his behaviour.

A body camera worn by a police officer caught the moment Glover spat directly into the face of another officer from only a few inches away. The officer was left with spittle covering his face, neck and in his eye.

Glover was bailed to attend York Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, but failed to appear. As there was no explanation for his non-attendance, the prosecution applied to proceed in his absence. The charge was proven and Magistrates issued a warrant without bail.

Based on press reports of Glover's earlier misdemeanours, it would appear this latest conviction puts him in breach of a suspended sentence order imposed by Kirklees Magistrates on 25th February 2019. That being the case, the is the distinct possibility that sentence will be activated whenever the court catches up with him.

Sergeant James Finch, of the British Transport Police, said: "There're few things more disgusting than being spat at on duty. It's completely repulsive behaviour, reserved for offenders either completely ignorant of the consequences or who have no respect for themselves or other people.

"This was initially a low-level case of anti-social behaviour, instead Glover chose to seriously escalate the situation and assault one of our officers. This is something we take extremely seriously, it's not accepted as part of the job and he will face the consequences."

If anyone knows the whereabouts of Glover they can contact the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016.
