Grimsby Man Wanted by Humberside Police

A Grimsby man is wanted by police after escaping lawful custody earlier today.

Jonathan West, 28, was arrested and charged with causing actual bodily harm and two counts of common assault yesterday.

He was due to be presented at Grimsby Magistrates' Court this morning, but somehow gave custody officers the slip as he was transported between the police station and court.

A Humberside Police spokesperson said: "Officers in Grimsby are currently searching for Jonathan West who was due to appear in court this morning (Saturday, 2nd May 2020).

"West, 28, was arrested and charged with ABH and two counts of common assault yesterday (Friday, 1st May 2020) and had been remanded until his appearance at Grimsby Magistrates' Court.

"On being transferred to court by security company GEOAmey this morning, West absconded and is now wanted by police to be returned to custody.

"A large number of enquiries have already been carried out by police in an attempt to locate him, and officers will continue to proactively look for West in order to arrest him.

"Anyone who believes they know where West is or who has any information as to his whereabouts, is asked to please call police on 101 with log number 124 of 2nd May 2020.

"Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 to provide information."

GEOAmey holds the Ministry of Justice Prisoner Escort and Custody Services (PECS) contract for the majority of England and Wales. It is responsible for the safe and secure transportation of prisoners to and from court. It is also responsible for the safe and secure custody of prisoners when they are in court.

Escaping lawful custody is an offence contrary to common law. As such it attracts a theoretical maximum penalty of life imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine.

Update (4/5/20): Humberside Police has confirmed that West has been located and arrested. He will appear at Grimsby Magistrates' Court this morning to face an additional charge of escaping lawful custody.
