Aston Villa Footballer Jack Grealish Charged with Motoring Offences

Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish has been charged with two motoring offences.

The 24-year-old footballer stands accused of driving without due care and attention, contrary to section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, and failing to stop at or report a road accident, contrary to section 170(4) of the Act.

Both offences are triable summarily. An offence under section 3 has a maximum penalty of a fine at level 5 (unlimited); an offence under section 170(4) has a maximum penalty of 26 weeks' custody and/or a fine at level 5 (unlimited).

A statement by West Midlands Police said: "A Premier League footballer has been charged with driving without due care and attention, and failing to stop at or report a collision.

"Jack Grealish is accused of the offences in Waterside, Dickens Heath, Solihull, on Sunday, 29th March.

"An investigation was launched after we responded to reports of a car hitting parked vehicles and the driver fleeing on foot.

"The 24-year-old from Barnt Green, Worcestershire, has been postal charged to appear before Birmingham Magistrates Court on 25th August."

Photographs of Grealish's damaged white Range Rover were posted on Twitter shortly afterwards.

The incident took place during the coronavirus lockdown, just a few days after Grealish had made a video urging fans to stay at home.

On Monday, 30th March Grealish took to Twitter to post a video apologising for his actions of the weekend just passed.

He said: "I just want to do a quick video message to say how deeply embarrassed I am about what has happened this weekend.

"I know it's a tough time for everyone at the moment, being locked indoors for so long.

"I obviously just got a call from a friend asking me to go around to his and I stupidly agreed to do so.

"I don't want anyone to make the same mistake that I did. I urge everyone to stay at home and to follow the rules and guidelines about what we've been asked to do."
