A Blackburn man attempted to escape from the dock earlier today.
Wayne Knights, 42, of Greenhurst Close, Blackburn, was appearing in custody at the town's Magistrates' Court in relation to two charges of assault by beating.
He denied both charges. We wouldn't be writing about the case at this stage, were it not for the unusual events that followed.
According to reports, Knights had been complaining of a bad back prior to his appearance, but that didn't deter him from attempting to jump the dock when Deputy District Judge Jane Hamilton decided to remand him in custody.
At that stage Knights said he wanted to change his plea, but the Judge refused.
He clambered onto the wooden ledge and attempted to scale the 7-foot high reinforced glass surround.
The two custody officers present managed to grab hold of Knights' leg and contain him within the dock until help arrived.
Knights will next appear at the same court on 6th May 2021, although he might be on the videolink on that occasion.
Attempts to escape for custody are fortunately quite rare.
