Cambridgeshire Shop Thief Used Newspaper and Bread to Conceal Stolen Goods

A Cambridgeshire shop thief used a newspaper and loaf of bread to repeatedly steal goods from a local discount retailer.

Aaron Beckett, 44, of All Saints Close, Elm, Wisbech, admitted two offences of shop theft and another of assault by beating when he appeared at Peterborough Magistrates' Court on Monday, 15th November 2021.

The offence also put prolific thief Beckett in breach of post-sentence supervision.

The court heard that on Tuesday, 19th October 2021 Beckett walked into B&M in Elm High Road, Wisbech, clutching a newspaper. He made his way to the electrical aisle, picked up a Goodmans LED projector worth £99, concealed it behind the newspaper and walked out of the shop without making any attempt at payment.

A fortnight later, on Tuesday, 2nd November 2021, he returned to the same store and selected a loaf of bread, which he proceeded to empty the contents of. He then walked to the same Goodmans projectors and concealed one in the empty bread wrapper before walking out of the shop without making any attempt at payment.

Just a day later, on Wednesday, 3rd November 2021, the cocky thief returned yet again to the same store. This time staff were alert to his antics, so challenged and detained him as he attempted to steal a third projector. Beckett became aggressive and assaulted one of the staff members.

Beckett, who has 47 previous convictions mainly for offences of dishonesty, was arrested by Cambridgeshire police on Saturday, 13th November 2021 and held in custody until his court appearance.

Considering the offences in totality, District Judge Ken Sheraton sentenced him to 14 weeks' custody and ordered him to pay £199 in compensation to B&M.
