North Yorkshire Man Jailed for Contempt of Court

A North Yorkshire man has earned an extra month in custody by launching a tirade of abuse at the Magistrates dealing with his case.

Adam Stephenson, 40, of Bilton, Harrogate, admitted breaching the requirements of a community order when he appeared at York Magistrates' Court earlier this week.

The order was made as a result of Stephenson assaulting an emergency worked at York Railway Station on 3rd July 2022.

The probation service reported that he had repeatedly failed to engage with the requirements of the order.

Given Stephenson's non-compliance, the bench decided to revoke the order and resentence him to 18 weeks' custody for the original offence.

Clearly unimpressed at that decision, Stephenson launched a volley of abuse at the bench.

Having taken some time in the cells to reflect, he returned to the courtroom and admitted wilfully interrupting the proceedings of the court, contrary to section 12 of the Contempt of Court Act 1981.

Magistrates sentenced him to 4 weeks' custody to run consecutively.

Good manners costs nothing. Poor manners can cost quite a lot!
