Absolute Idiocy: Northamptonshire Porsche Driver Clocked at 162 MPH

A Northamptonshire Porsche driver was clocked at 162 mph on the A43 Corby bypass.

Christopher Debono, 62, of Windingbrook Lane, Northampton, admitted speeding when he appeared at Wellingborough Magistrates' Court on Friday, 8th September 2023.

Speeding is an offence contrary to section 89(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. It is a summary offence with a maximum penalty of a fine at level 3 (£1,000), which increases to a maximum fine at level 4 (£2,500) for offences committed on the motorway.

Debono was detected by a mobile speed camera as he drove along the A43 on the early evening of Friday, 19th May 2023.

He was fined the statutory maximum £1,000 and ordered to pay £400 surcharge and £90 towards prosecution costs.

Debono was also disqualified from driving for a period of 6 months.

Matt O'Connell, Northamptonshire Police's Safer Roads Team Manager, said: "The A43 Corby bypass is subject to the national speed limit of 70 mph, but this driver was detected at well over twice that.

"Excess speed is one of the fatal five road risks, vastly increasing the chances of a serious collision, and the consequences of a crash at over 160 mph do not bear thinking about.

"Our mobile enforcement vans are deployed across Northamptonshire to detect motoring offences at sites where we have data to show there is an increased risk to road users, and I'm glad our team have been able to bring to justice a driver who on that day cannot have had a thought to his own, or anyone else's, safety.

"Everyone has a right to get home unharmed, and we are committed to improving road safety across our county by taking action against irresponsible drivers, as this case shows."

Exceeding the speed limit by such a margin is nothing short of absolute idiocy.

Even if Debono considers his driving skills absolutely top-notch, which is clearly not the case, there is no way he would have time to see and react to anything appearing unexpectedly on the carriageway in front of his vehicle.
