Chester Man Jailed for Possession of Potato Peeler

A Chester man has been jailed for possessing a potato peeler in a public place.

Brian Chadd, 54, of no fixed abode, was convicted of offences of threatening behaviour and possession of a bladed article, following a trial in his absence at Chester Magistrates' Court on 5th December 2023.

Possession of a bladed article is an offence under section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988. It has a maximum penalty of 26 weeks' custody and/or an unlimited fine on summary conviction; 4 years' custody and/or an unlimited fine on conviction on indictment.

Having failed to attend for trial, a warrant was issued for Chadd's arrest. He was apprehended and put before the court for sentencing on Saturday, 9th December 2023.

Magistrates heard that Chadd had "a horrendous record of threatening violence". It was also noted that this was his fourth conviction for possession of a bladed article.

Having considered the circumstances, they were of the view that Chadd's offences were so serious that only a custodial sentence was appropriate.

Chadd was sentenced to 26 weeks' custody and ordered to pay £640 towards prosecution costs and £154 surcharge.

Magistrates also made a deprivation order in respect of the potato peeler.
