Troubled Teens Sentenced for Brutal Murder of Brianna Ghey

The troubled teen murderers of Warrington schoolgirl Brianna Ghey were each handed a life sentence today.

Scarlett Jenkinson, 16, of Warrington, Cheshire, and Eddie Ratcliffe, 16, of Leigh, Greater Manchester lured Brianna to her death at Linear Park, Culcheth, on Saturday, 11th February 2023.

You can read more about the circumstances surrounding Brianna's murder in my earlier article (caution: the details are disturbing).

Murder convictions always attract a mandatory (notional) life sentence, but it fell to Mrs Justice Yip to determine the minimum period in custody each killer must serve until they are considered eligible for release on licence. This minimum term is determined by applying conditions listed in schedule 21 of the Sentencing Act 2020.

The Judge has determined the following:

  • Scarlett Jenkinson must serve a minimum of 22 years' custody until she will be eligible for consideration for release on licence.
  • Eddie Ratcliffe must serve a minimum of 20 years' custody until he will be eligible for consideration for release on licence.

It should be noted that consideration for release on licence is entirely a matter for the Parole Board. Release on licence will only be permitted if the Parole Board is satisfied that their continued custody (beyond the minimum term) is no longer necessary for the protection of the public. As such there is no guarantee that Jenkinson or Ratcliffe will ever be released from custody. Even if they are, they will be subject to a whole-life licence and liable to recall if they commit further offences of otherwise fail to abide by their licence conditions.
