The Courts and Tribunals Judiciary website has published the latest in its series of videos about different members of the Judiciary and the roles they perform.
This week, to coincide with volunteers' week, the latest video focuses on Magistrate Tom Quarton-Manuel of the Nottinghamshire Bench.
In this short video Tom describes his motivation for becoming a Magistrate and the role he performs in court.
He highlights some of the key qualities needed to be an effective Magistrate: Sound judgement; good communication; and socially-minded with an awareness of the bigger picture.
Magistrates come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Ideally the composition of the Bench needs to be reflective of the community it serves.
You do not need formal legal qualifications to become a Magistrate, because a professionally qualified Legal Advisor will always be on hand to give advice on law and procedure. Legal Advisors advise; Magistrates decide.
