Guilty: Cumbrian Men Destroyed Iconic Sycamore Gap Tree

Two Cumbrian men have been convicted of felling the iconic Sycamore Gap tree and damaging Hadrian's Wall in the process.

Daniel Graham, 39, of Milbeck Stables, Carlisle and Adam Carruthers, 32, of Church Street, Wigton each denied two offences of criminal damage.

They were convicted by unanimous jury verdict on Friday, 9th May 2025, following an eight day trial at Newcastle Crown Court.

Trial judge, Mrs Justice Lambert, has ordered the preparation of pre-sentence reports, including a mental health report on Carruthers. Both men have been remanded in custody until they are sentenced on Tuesday, 15th July 2025.

Graham has been remanded "for his own protection" since December 2024, when an incident took place at his home address. The trial was originally listed for then, but had to be adjourned owing to Graham's hospitalisation.

I haven't got time to write much about this at the moment, save to say it is pretty clear that Graham in particular has lied his way through the entire investigation and trial process.

This is a breaking story, which will be updated later.
