Update on North Shields Dog Cruelty Case

You might recall from our earlier article that Tyler Laverick was bailed to appear to North Tyneside Magistrates' Court yesterday for sentencing.

On 13th April 2018 Laverick was convicted in his absence of causing undue suffering to an animal, contrary to section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

As a custodial sentence was a real possibility, the bench issued a warrant for his arrest. He was promptly arrested and brought before the remand court at Newcastle Quayside on 14th April, where he was re-bailed until yesterday's hearing.

At yesterday's hearing submissions were made about the reasons behind Laverick's failure to attend for trial on 13th April. According to Laverick's solicitor, Stephen Davies, the unemployed 20-year-old had not been resident at the address the court held for him.

"He wasn't aware of the proceedings, he wasn't aware either of the hearing dates", Mr Davies said.

Given Mr Davies' submissions, the court decided that is would be in the interests of justice to re-open Laverick's case.

Laverick was released on unconditional bail until his new trial date of 28th June.
