Katie Price on Drink Drive Charges

Katie Price, the well known television personality and former glamour model, has been charged with being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle.

The story goes that Price, who has recently undergone treatment for alcohol addiction, fell off the wagon by engaging in a five day bender at the start of October.

The mother-of-five, 40, was arrested in the earlier hours of 10th October after turning up uninvited to her on-off boyfriend Kris Boyson's 30th birthday party.

Reports from the time suggest that passing British Transport Police officers noticed damage to the front of Price's vehicle, which was parked on Shooters Hill Road, Woolwich. She was identified as the person in charge of the vehicle and in the officers' opinion was the worse for wear with drink. She was not actually driving the vehicle at the time of the incident, hence the nature of the charge.

Price was arrested at the scene and taken to a nearby police station where she provided an evidential specimen of breath, which exceeded the legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. She was released pending further investigations and has now been requisitioned to attend Bromley Magistrates' Court on 7th January 2019.

It is an offence contrary to section 5 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 to drive or attempt to drive a motor vehicle on a road or other public place after the proportion of alcohol in a person's body exceeds the prescribed limit.

The maximum penalty for this offence is 6 months imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine. The media always highlights imprisonment as a sentencing option, but it has to be said that it is reserved for the most exceptional of circumstances.

Price has several relevant previous convictions, some of which are very recent. In July Price was caught flouting a six month driving disqualification - imposed under the totting up rules after a series of preceding offences - by a tabloid newspaper, but no further action has been taken against her (as of yet).

Update: Katie Price will appear at Crawley Magistrates' Court on 9th January 2019 on charges of driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance. Read more.
