The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised a charge of assault by beating against Mike Amesbury MP.
Amesbury, the Labour MP for Runcorn and Helmsby, was first elected to Parliament in 2017.
As has been widely reported, the 55-year-old was involved in an incident in Frodsham during the early hours of Saturday, 26th October 2024.
Video footage of the incident was published on social media, which led to the lifelong Labour man releasing a statement to clarify his position.
A day after Amesbury's statement further CCTV footage emerged seemingly contradicting his claim that he "felt threatened on the street".
Having interviewed Amesbury under caution, Cheshire Police forwarded a file of evidence to the CPS for charging consideration.
The CPS has just confirmed that it has authorised a charge of assault by beating against Mike Amesbury MP. You can read more about this offence in my Offences Against the Person article. The CPS will have carefully reviewed the evidence and chosen the most appropriate charge. A charge of assault by beating would be appropriate in cases where the victim had suffered very little physical injury, if any at all.
For whatever reason the CPS rapidly deleted this tweet - possibly because it names the wrong charge (should be assault by beating) - but here it is:
In response to today's decision Amesbury has just shared the following statement on his social media channels.
Mike Amesbury MP will appear at Chester Magistrates' Court at 10 am on Monday, 30th December 2024.
