A South Wales headteacher stands accused of attacking his deputy with a spanner after discovering they were in a relationship with the same woman teacher.
Anthony John Felton, 54, of Penyrheol Road, Gorseinon, appeared at Swansea Magistrates' Court on Friday, 7th March 2025.
He is accused of a single offence of attempted wounding with intent. Wounding with intent is an offence contrary to section 18 of Offences Against the Person Act 1861, which has a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The attempted offence has the same maximum sentence.
As this is an indictable only matter Felton was not required to enter a plea, but his solicitor, Mark Davies, indicated to the court that he would be formally entering a guilty plea on his next appearance at Swansea Crown Court.
Emergency services were called to St Joseph's Catholic School and Sixth Form Centre in Aberavon on the morning of Wednesday, 5th March 2025.
On arrival they found that deputy headteacher, Richard Pyke, 51, had suffered head injuries consistent with being struck by a heavy metal spanner. The alleged assault is said to have taken place in front of pupils.
The Sun reports that prior to the alleged assault, Felton circulated an email to school staff apologising for the events that were about to take place. In the email he accused the unnamed woman teacher of "sleeping her way to the top" and expressed his regret for promoting her within the school.
Lisa Jones, prosecuting, asked for Felton to be remanded in custody "for his own welfare and protection".
District Judge Chris James agreed.
Felton's next appearance will be at Swansea Crown Court on Monday, 7th April 2025.
