A County Durham man has been jailed after being caught behind the wheel whilst subject to six driving disqualifications.
Robert Peter Holliday, 37, of Billy Row, Crook, admitted offences of driving whilst disqualified and without valid third party insurance when he appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, 5th August 2025.
Driving whilst disqualified is an offence under section 103 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. It has maximum sentence of 26 weeks' custody and/or a fine at level 5 (unlimited) on summary conviction.
It would be no exaggeration to describe Holliday as a one man walking crimewave. He is the epitome of a drain on society, having been jailed for 28 months for burglary at the start of 2025 (yes, you did read that correctly - he's clearly been credited with a lot of time on remand and tagged curfew).
Eagle-eyed police spotted the career criminal behind the wheel of a Ford Transit in Staindrop, County Durham, on the afternoon of Monday, 4th August 2025.
The officer turned his vehicle to pursue the six-times disqualified driver, who accelerated to speeds as high as 70 mph in an effort to escape through the quaint medieval village.
Realising he was outgunned, the 37-year-old eventually pulled over and handed his keys to the officer.
Having heard about Holliday's most recent escapade, Magistrates were left in little doubt that the custody threshold had been surpassed.
Holliday was sentenced to 18 weeks' immediate custody and ordered to pay £154 surcharge and £85 towards prosecution costs.
He was further disqualified for a period of 33-months, which means he now has seven active disqualifications to his name.

If he drove at 70 mph through a village, why wasn't he charged with dangerous driving?
